The Older COMPACT model
This photo is of the typical early Gilmore "Compact" loom. Though not really a fold up type loom it was named "Compact" because the Warp Beam could come off, and parts would fold up making it narrow enough to fit through a standard door. The "Rigid" models before it had to be disassembled to get through a doorway. The older styles had the Front Beam, or Breast Beam, secured and non-removable with bolts. A brake lever that ended in a bent dog on the Warp Beam brake ratchet went from front to back along the outside of the Castle, or Jack End. A foot lever could be swung out to the right side on the floor so the Warp Beam could be released. This particular part is often confusing to loom owners and can be removed if desired.

The X Frame Loom

The "X" frame loom was one of the original Gilmore designs from the late 1930's.  Although it is not made by Gilmore Looms anymore its basic  folding design is being made by other loom companies. Below are scanned advertisements for the X frame, the second one being an ad for Handwoven in 1997.

 1940's Informational Brochure

The following 8 pages are from an advertisement brochure for Gilmore Looms in 1940. It shows the different looms that were being produced. The main looms that continued to be produced for many years were the "Rigid" and "X" type looms. It is interesting to note the 1940 prices. We also have a copy of this brochure that was sent to a weaver in 1942. Mr. Gilmore had scratched out the printed prices and handwritten in new prices that increased the looms $5 to $10.  He had also written "discontinued" on the large Inkle loom and offered a new entry Inkle "table type" loom for $5.50.

The construction of these looms eliminates the necessity of
ever adjusting the harness frames for height.  The only ties being
from the treadles to the lamms.  The harnesses are raised with
a PATENTED coupler and they always fall to rest at the proper
level.
The nine inch heddles give sufficient shed for all tpes of
weaving.  The beater is equipped with shuttle race.
